Are you looking for a new source of creative talent? Consider participating in SAA’s Externship Program, where one of our nearly-graduates spends four weeks at your company in the Spring. It’s one of those elusive win-win situations: you get to show the student what day-to-day life in the design industry is like, while your company benefits from their training and talent.
SAA’s Externship Program is an essential part of our students’ education and takes place just prior to their graduation. It’s a mandatory part of the curriculum, and students receive course credit.
Students will have completed five terms of their six-term education at SAA prior to the start of the Externship. They will have had over 1,700 classroom hours of graphic design education. They will have completed coursework using Adobe Creative Suite (Cloud version), Adobe After Effects, had instruction in web development utilizing html and CSS, and have been introduced to Microsoft Office.
SAA is an award-winning graphic design college that has been recognized for the past several years as one of the top 20 graphic design colleges in the U.S. Our students’ work has garnered prodigious awards from organizations such as the American Advertising Federation, the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, Communication Arts magazine and GDUSA magazine. In the past two years, students have won National Silver and Gold ADDYs. Recently, 17 students from the class of 2015 were awarded with 21 American Graphic Design awards in a competition sponsored by GDUSA magazine.
Our graduates are in high demand by employers throughout the United States. We currently have alumni employed by Apple, Victoria’s Secret, Nike, Dell, the Ohio Attorney General’s office, Leo Burnett Worldwide, and Hewlett Packard. Alumni are employed in 37 states, Canada, and the U.K.
This year’s Externship Program begins Monday, May 1, 2017 and concludes Friday, May 26, 2017. Students work full-time at your office for four weeks and are able to bring their own MacBook laptop loaded with the most recent version of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
The Externships are either paid or unpaid, at the discretion of the employer. Last year about 50% of the Externships were paid. The compensation varied and if you choose to pay the student we can provide guidance on hourly rates.
SAA’s Externship Program has consistently received overwhelmingly positive feedback from employers and students. The Externship provides SAA students with a professional context for their graphic design education and provides the employer with the opportunity to work with young, creative talent who are educated in current trends and have fresh ideas.
