    student awards & honors

    Students at the school of advertising art win more advertising and design student awards than other area colleges. These awards are from outstanding professional organizations, including the Greater Dayton Advertising Association, CSCA: Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, AIGA: American Institute of Graphic Arts [Cincinnati, Ohio], Advertising Club of Cincinnati and Step-Inside Design magazine [national publication].

    2009 District Five ADDY Awards

    saa earned seven awards in the American Advertising Federation's District 5 ADDY competition, and was one of only two Dayton area firms receiving recognition at the District level.

    saa student artwork was recognized with Gold ADDY’s going to Michael Harchaoui and Curtis Estridge and Silver ADDY’s to Ahlia Moyers and Joe Morton. These 2008 graduates were recognized for artwork created while students at saa.

    Co-Creative Directors Jessica Graves and Matt Flick won a Gold ADDY for the 2009-2010 saa catalog. In addition, two Silver ADDY’s were awarded for saa promotional materials.

    The ADDY Awards annually acknowledge excellence and innovation in advertising and graphic design. The American Advertising Federation, a not-for-profit industry association, conducts the ADDY Awards through its 200 member clubs in 15 districts. District 5 is comprised of AAF member clubs in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.


    2009 Regional ADDY Awards

    The Greater Dayton Advertising Association [GDAA] annually recognizes excellence in local advertising, marketing, and graphic design through their Hermes Award competition. Area businesses, advertising agencies, marketing firms, and schools submit work to be judged by a panel of industry professionals from around the country. Selected pieces are awarded Silver or Bronze ADDYs with the highest scoring piece in each category receiving the prestigious Gold ADDY, or Hermes bust [Hermes is “the messenger of the gods” in Greek mythology].

    In the Student Category, 31 total ADDYs were awarded to 18 saa students, including 14 Silver and 16 Bronze. In addition, 2008 alum Michael Harchaoui won the Hermes/Gold ADDY for an event poster created while a student at saa. Matt Flick was Harchaoui’s instructor on the winning piece.

    Other 2008 graduates receiving recognition for work created while at saa include:
    Curtis Estridge [2 Silver, 2 Bronze], Kenny Glenn [[2 Silver, 1 Bronze], Heath Javier [Silver], Jesse Masin [1 Silver, 1 Bronze], Jennifer Meyer [1 Silver, 1 Bronze], Daylene Morris [Silver], Justin Morter [1 Silver, 3 Bronze], Joe Morton [Silver], Ahlia Moyers [Silver], Logan Queen [3 Bronze], Brie Rehm [Bronze], Geoff Stump [Bronze], and Andy Valentine [2 Bronze].

    2009 graduates receiving awards include: Adam Moser [Bronze], Cassie Siebert [Silver], Tyler Stires [Silver], and Cassandra Turner [Silver].

    saa staff and faculty also did well in the competition receiving 3 Hermes/Gold, 7 Silver, and 1 Bronze ADDY for saa’s marketing, recruitment, and promotional materials.

    In addition, longtime saa instructor Dan Johnson of Dan Johnson Design earned 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

     

    2008 National ADDY Awards

    The American Advertising Federation awarded 2007 saa graduate, Angela Lammers, a National Student Silver ADDY at The National ADDY Show on June 10, 2008 in Atlanta, GA. The ADDY Awards annually recognize excellence in advertising and graphic design. Lammers created her winning book cover design while attending the school of advertising art. This is the second consecutive year saa brought home National ADDY honors in the Design College Student Category. In 2007, Chris Allen won a National Student Silver ADDY for his personal website design. Allen is now employed as a web designer by BGH Studios in Dayton.

    2008 District Five ADDY Awards

    District Five of the American Advertising Federation is comprised of all AAF Chapters and colleges in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. This includes very large national markets like Cleveland, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Four saa students were honored with a District five Silver ADDY. Three saa students were also honored with the prestigious District five Gold ADDY. All winners were then forwarded to the National ADDY competition in Atlanta, GA.

    2008 Regional ADDY Awards

    The Greater Dayton Advertising Association [GDAA] annually recognizes excellence in local advertising, marketing, and graphic design through their Hermes Award competition. In the Student Category, the judges awarded 35 ADDYs—32 went to saa students, including 12 Silver and 19 Bronze. In addition, Dusty Ahrens won the Hermes/Gold ADDY for a 3D illustration created while a student at saa. Ahrens, a 2007 saa grad, is employed as a graphic designer by Midmark Corporation in Versailles, Ohio.

    This year, Gerrad Wise made Hermes Award history by becoming the first student ever to receive a coveted Judge’s Choice Award. David Bonner from Doe Anderson in Louisville, KY awarded his Judge’s Choice to Wise for his Folgers ad, calling it “the best conceptual piece in the Show, bar none.”


    2007 CSCA Creative Best Awards

    Columbus Society of Communicating Arts [CSCA] held its annual Creative Best design competition on November 15, 2007. Best of Category honors in the Student Category went to 2006 graduate Chance Graham for his personal website, created while a student at saa. Chance also won an Award of Merit for his Harvest Baptist Church Identity Set design, also created during his second year at saa. Chance currently lives in Columbus and is employed as a web/interactive designer at Resource Interactive. Also in the student category, second-year student Logan Queen won an Award of Merit for his original photography. Logan is employed in Dayton, Ohio as a graphic designer by Design Chemistry.

    2007 National ADDY Awards
    Congratulations to Chris Allen [2006 saa graduate] for winning a Silver National ADDY from the American Advertising Federation at their annual convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Chris is the first saa student to win a National ADDY.

    2007 Greater Dayton Advertising Association Addy Awards
    saa students received 34 of the 36 student awards, including the only student Gold ADDY/Hermes Award presented to a student. saa faculty members also received 10 professional awards, including 2 Judge's Choice Awards.
