The school of advertising art [saa] offers Saturday Morning Art Classes to high school students in the Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring. In these high school art classes, students experiment with fun and exciting ways of expressing themselves artistically in areas such as drawing, mixed media, photography, and painting.

Open to all high school students; selected talented participants each receive a $500 award to go toward their future college education at saa.

Winter Classes 2012
Skateboard Deck Design
Instructor: Elaine Potter
Dates: January 28 and February 4, 11, 18, 25
Time: 9am–12pm
The following materials will be provided for use by the students: acrylic paint, palettes, paintbrushes, water cups, and a skateboard deck (other parts must be obtained by student, if desired, although not necessary).

Week 1
- Elements of Art: space, form, texture, line, shape, color, and value.
- Color Wheels: Students will create various color wheels in order to learn how to mix colors. This includes primary, secondary, and tertiary.
- Color Theory: Students will learn about different types of color combinations, such as monochromatic, analogous, complementary, neutral, warm colors, cool colors, etc.
- Value Studies: Students will practice drawing a full range of values, beginning with white and ending with black.
- Principles of Art: movement, emphasis, unity, harmony, variety, balance, contrast, proportion, and pattern/rhythm. Students will explore the Principles of Art by creating various sketches using one or more of the principles.
Week 2
- Brainstorming: Students will learn new brainstorming techniques, which will help them develop a design for their skateboard deck. Students will brainstorm 3 different ideas for their skateboard.
- Sketches: Students will sketch each of their 3 designs, and then choose 1 sketch.
- Students will choose a color combination and incorporate their knowledge of Elements of Art and Principles of Art to create a visually compelling drawing.
- Students will begin painting their board by mid-class.
Weeks 3 and 4
- Students will continue to paint their board.
Week 5
- Students will complete their board by mid-class.
- saa will then host a gallery event for the students and their friends and families. All skateboards will be displayed for everyone to view.

Spring Classes 2012
Digital Photography
Instructor: John Rossi
Dates: April 7, 14, 21, 28, and May 5
Time: 9am–12pm

Each class will be an intensive hands-on session to help each student gain extensive knowledge of the basics of photography.  Manual settings will be introduced as well as how to build stronger compositions and how to choose appropriate lighting while photographing your subjects and settings.

Lectures, critiques, and class labs will help aid students’ understanding of the material. Field trips will also be included as a learning tool throughout the course.

Note:  Although there is no required camera for this set of classes, a digital SLR will be most beneficial to the student.  The first class will pertain mainly to using a camera in manual settings and exploring the creative freedom the manual settings allow.

Summer Classes 2012
Creativity Unleashed
Instructor: Scott Gibbs
Dates: July 14, 21, 28, and August 4, 11
Time: 9am–12pm

Creativity Unleashed is a class designed to introduce and/or refine artistic abilities and techniques. Different approaches and insights will be explored into known and not-so-known areas of creativity. The focus in each class will be to develop a quality piece of work while not compromising the free spirit.
